A Hussar in the army of Franz Joseph I (the emperor’s monogram “FJI” is on the sabretache). Hussar uniforms at that time were usually blue; based on the tall red shako cap, the soldier here was a member of the 2nd Regiment of Hussars (King of Hanover). The regiment fought the Hungarians in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49.
